Expensive or grave failure consequences exist
Information overload exists and where
There is lots of data is available – most of it low level and most of it useless.
Some data is created to be deceptive.
Finding the useful data is a key problem.
Data must be re-sampled continuously or at least occasionally.
What data is useful changes regularly with the situation and intended activities.
Information uncertainty exists and where
Information may be missing, unreliable, or unknown.
Acquiring information has a cost and may interfere with other activities.
Acquisition of new facts may invalidate previously believed facts.
Believed facts may disagree with each other.
Many alternative activities from which to choose exist
Many dissimilar alternatives.
Reactions to a threat occur: Ignore, evade, avoid, attack, feint.
Each alternative results in a different future state.
Complicates prediction of the future.
Complex activity interactions exist
Many alternative activities exist and interact with each other.
Activities conflict with other activities.
Reusable resources exist and may be deployed in many alternative ways.
Consumable resources exist whose depletion may impact a number of alternative activities.
Several activities must be accomplished in parallel to have program success.
Both similar and dissimilar activities are simultaneously active in order to have program success.
Time pressure exists
The human operator is able to complete all tasks in most situations, but not in all situations.
Some problems will need to be addressed with limited computation/reasoning.
Some problems might have to be deferred or ignored due to resources.
Capable adversaries exist
In situations where what worked yesterday will not work today.
Where deceptive information is part of the data collected.
Where an adversaries’ activities must be identified to be countered.
